You may be asking yourself…..”self, what insider information could I possibly want or need regarding physical therapy, sports medicine, rehabilitation and medicine.” Well, very good question. There is a ton of information regarding treatment techniques, philosophies, and medicine. But how do you separate the fluff from useful relevant information? Our mission is to gain inside(r) input and perspective on all the information floating around from the experts and then dissect it…figuratively. We will present each of these topics and more in an objective way, and then pick them apart to get to the core of what is useful in the clinical setting. We have several prominent guests lined up for interviews to help shed light on various therapeutic topics ranging from joint manipulations, functional training, business ownership while being a clinician, sports rehab and much more. We cover Physical Therapy (PT), Manual therapy, rehab, sports medicine, business practice, and many more topics. Therapy Insiders podcast is hosted by UpDoc Media co-founders Dr. Gene Shirokobrod and Dr. Ben Fung.

Physical Therapy Podcast Worlds Collide

4 people. 2 podcasts. Many, many tangents. 

When you have a long running podcast, such as Therapy Insiders, we often get asked about other podcasts in the physical therapy space. While we keep a pulse on the entire industry (see: top 40 influencers), we don't necessarily listen to every podcast in the industry. One of the podcasts we do keep regular in our podcast playlist is PT Pintcast. So it only made sense to get the host and founder, Jimmy McKay, on Therapy Insiders to talk about...well...everything.

Jimmy has an interesting career origin story. A unique perspective as a podcast host, new grad physical therapist and an advocate for doing good.

In the case of Brian Carroll, it took almost stepping away from his career and passion of powerlifting to finally find the right clinician to help him. 

The result? A story that goes from near despair to path of happiness. 

In the end, it was a gift of injury that brought two people together that ultimately changed both their lives. For the better.

Steve Anderson is the former CEO of Therapeutic Associates, a physical therapy practice with more than 80 outpatient clinics in Washington, Oregon and Idaho that also serves as a major hospital contract in Southern California. Therapeutic Associates was formed in 1952, and Steve was only the 3rd CEO and held that position for 19 years, beginning in 1998 after 16 years with the company.

As a physical therapist, Steve started his career in 1980 in Portland, Oregon. In 1983 he opened the first Therapeutic Associates clinic in the state of Washington in West Seattle. As the owner and director of West Seattle Physical Therapy for 16 years, Steve was elected by his peers to become the CEO of Therapeutic Associates in 1998. 

In addition to his day-to-day responsibilities, Steve is also active in national organizations related to physical therapy, including the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and as a Board of Trustee for The Foundation for Physical Therapy. He also served as the President of The Private Practice Section of APTA for 6 years between 2002 and 2008. He received his section’s most prestigious award, the Robert G. Dicus Service Award, in 2010.

Steve received the APTA Leadership Advocacy Award in 2006 for his efforts in Washington D.C. and Washington State in the legislative arena. In 2012 Steve received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Northwestern University Physical Therapy School. In 2016 Steve was awarded Physical Therapist of the Year by PTWA, the APTA chapter for the state of Washington.

Steve earned his bachelor’s degree from Pacific Lutheran University. He went onto physical therapy school at Northwestern University in Chicago. He has been a physical therapist for 37 years and worked for Therapeutic Associates until the end of 2016. In addition to his duties with Orange Dot Consulting, he also serves as a Senior Healthcare Advisor for VGM Advantage. He resides in Seattle, Washington with his wife, Sharon.

PERSONAL MISSION

I consider myself a lifelong student of the field. In my decade of experience, I've had the privilege of working with thousands of clients and athletes in the private sector and in the team atmosphere. It has become my personal mission to help the fields of strength and conditioning and sports rehabilitation grow as much as possible through my coaching, my voice, and my content.

 My ultimate goal is to consistently provide simple information that is digestible to the masses. Intelligent movement, strength, and performance should be no secret—this information should be shared through the proper avenues to help promote physical strength development in training and to help reduce the rate of injury in performance. This is what drives me.

CAREER EXPERIENCE

Throughout my career, I've worked with members from professional organizations in the NHL, NBA, NFL, and MLB. Additionally, I've had the pleasure of working with the general population from all walks of life, including the likes of powerlifters, Olympic weightlifters, CrossFit athletes, marathon runners, and triathletes.

Working with healthy and injured athletes alike in both training and treatment, I've also been utilized regularly as a consultant with sports teams, collegiate athletic programs, and corporate companies. Most importantly, I view human connection, effective communication, and complete individualization as the most powerful coaching tools, regardless of service.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

I place a strong emphasis on personal growth and continued education, in order to better serve the individuals I work with. Primarily, I focus on a movement-based approach through progressive strength development and technical skill acquisition. I am a proud graduate of the University of Massachusetts Boston where I obtained my Bachelors of Science Degree in Exercise and Health Sciences, and the Cortiva Institute where I obtained my License in Manual Therapy.

As someone who stresses the value of walking the walk alongside my athletes and clients, it's important for me to consistently work on my own physical preparation as well. My most recent athletic endeavors have taken place on the powerlifting platform with competition bests of 385 squat, 285 bench press, and 465 deadlift.

Dr. Reagan graduated magna cum laude with his Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree with an emphasis in Manual Therapy from the University of St. Augustine where he was awarded the “Professional Promise Award”. Previously, he graduated magna cum laude with his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science degree with an emphasis in Strength and Conditioning from Liberty University. The first ever chiropractic member of the McKenzie Institute (U.S.) Board of Directors he serves on the editorial boards of numerous journals including the Journal of Occupational Rehabilitation; the PM&R  Journal of Injury, Function and Rehabilitation; the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapy; and Journal of Manual Therapy.

Dr. Liebenson is the first health care provider in California to receive a Certification of Recognition from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) on Achievement of Recognition for Delivery of Quality Back Pain Care. He is actively engaged in ongoing research on the spinal stabilization system as a Visiting Scholar at Pr. Stuart McGill’s Spine Biomechanics Laboratory at the University of Waterloo. He began studying with both Dr. Karel Lewit and Pr Vladimir Janda beginning in 1987 and began hosting Pavel Kolar’s programs in the late 1990’s.

Dr. Liebenson publishes extensively and is the editor of  the book/DVD Rehabilitation of the Spine: A Practioner’s Manual (2nd ed), 2007, DVD series Yoga & Ergonomics; Core Stability Training; & Functional-Performance Training and the The Functional Training Handbook (2014). He has had books published into Spanish, Greek, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese. He worked as team chiropractor for the N.B.A. Los Angeles Clippers from 2005-2009, consulted with the M.L.B. Arizona Diamondbacks, N.F.L. Seattle Seahawks, and Boston Sports Medicine and Performance Group. He serves on the Advisory Council for Equinox worldwide luxury fitness gyms.

Scot Morrison is a board certified physical therapist and strength coach who started his undergrad career as an engineering major. He quickly realized that he was spending all his free time researching human performance and moved on to Exercise Science while also training clients at the university fitness center. After graduating with honors in 2008 Scot began working for a hospital based medical fitness center in south Florida where he was involved in the development and implementation of a variety of programs with a focus on childhood obesity, Parkinson’s, Cardiac rehab, and corporate health. During this time he also resumed his schooling and graduated with honors from the University of St. Augustine as a Doctor of Physical Therapy.  As part of his DPT Scot completed advanced manual therapy training which he has continued since graduation with a focus on the approaches of the Maitlaind-Australian and McKenzie groups. Scot is a Titleist Certified golf fitness coach and a NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. He is very active in his professional bodies and is an occasional co-host of the popular podcast PT Inquest.

Scot currently works as the head of medical services for the MLS Professional Referee Organization. He also treats local athletes at Black Diamond Physical Therapy and runs a concierge private practice.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

I believe that every patient is unique. I believe that a system based on sound principles will trump a collection of methods. I am not quite sure that all we can change matters or that what matters can always be changed. I think perturbing the system, as long as adaptation is positive, is a good thing.
